We started the day with a walk around the full length of the fortified wall in Nördlingen which took us about 50 minutes but we were strolling and sticky beaking all the way. We only passed one ‘upright’ German on our walk (he was going the other direction) but we did find three sleeping Zimmermen (unsure if this is the correct spelling) but we had seen them last night in our restaurant where we learnt they travel around for three years and one day working for their food and keep. They wear black clothes and carry all their belongings in handkerchiefs tied in bundles. They each had a fantastic walking stick. The photos on this post are from Nördlingen. I will add a separate post for Landsberg am Lech.
The walk along the wall gave us a good insight into how Germans live in these old towns. Houses often share a backyard and there were some houses that had been built butting up against the strong fortified wall. Always the Church is the centre of the town. Closely located near the market place.
The town was very busy this morning – loads of tourists from buses. Many Japanese visitors.
We headed off and our next stop was Harburg where we stopped and looked at the castle – which was very well fortified with interesting openings in the walls for cross bows.
Our next stop was Friedberg where we stopped for lunch. We drove quickly through Augsburg as it was huge and frightened us both. We like little towns. We almost stayed at Friedberg but decided to keep going until Landsberg am Lech. We found some accommodation in a Gasthof – nothing fancy, but right in the middle of town. Unfortunately for us, Landsberg is undergoing a huge rebuilding program and the centre of the town is a MESS. The town is famous for a weir across the Lech River. It certainly was a popular place for swimmers when we arrived in the late afternoon.
We would really like to get an apartment in Füssen for three days so we can wash some clothes and get our own food. I think all our eating out is catching up on both of us! We would use this place as a base for the rest of our excursions.
We travelled just over 120km today and we are both tired.

[…] It is one of only a few German cities still entirely ringed by a defensive wall. We visited Nördlingen in August 2012 when we were travelling on the Romantic Road, there we were able to walk the full […]
