Landsberg am Lech to Füssen – A Day of Churches

Another very long and interesting day. We travelled 110 km and have decided to stay in Füssen for the next three days and use it as a base for further exploration.

We have driven through very different countryside and we are now at the foot of the Alps.

Our first stop was Schongau where we walked through the old town. There was lots of action occurring with people setting up food and drink stalls obviously for some fair, but we could not work it out and we also had plans to head further south. Here we looked at the St Mary of the Ascension Church which was quite spectacular. We also visited one of the tower gates of the city. The wall around this city is not complete, but we got the idea.

We then stopped in Rottenbuch to visit the remains of an Augustine monastery. The church here blew Michael away. The murals on the ceiling had very interesting perspectives which gave the viewer a straight on view, even though we were looking at it from a very obvious angle.

The next church was Wieskirche which is built in the middle of a meadow. I won’t explain the reason for this, but it does look odd out on its own. (although there are lots of souvenir sellers at this site, trying to make some money out of visitors.

We had lunch at a Hotel in Steingaden (see separate post about food in Pfaffenwinkel country).

Last stop was Füssen where we were able to book a room at a Gausthof very close to town. Unfortunately there was no chance to book an apartment at this late date. The place where we are staying is only €76 / night, the few others that were available were up to €205/ night!

Our quick look through Füssen has excited us about our stay. It looks like a very vibrant city and it is close to lots of tourist attractions. Tomorrow we plan to visit the Disneyland castle ( Neuschwanstein – with 300 steps for us to navigate) plus Hohenschwangau Castle.

The weather was perfect today. A cool start which then got to 27C.
