We have ended up spending tonight in a small town (Untermeitingen) that is not on the Romantic Road, but we have taken the detour as tomorrow we are meeting a German family at their home at 10am for a BBQ before we head back towards Würzburg. We have been invited because they are friends of our friend Gerard H from Tamworth. We are looking forward to meeting them and their young family.
We travelled 120 km today and filled up our car for the first time. Petrol is expensive (€1.56/L), but our little car is getting 7.3l/100km.
This morning we drove back to the two castles we visited yesterday to take some photos of our own before we went to the Tegelbergbahn at Schwangau. This is a cable car that takes people, mostly hang gliders and very keen walkers, to the top of a very high peak (approx 1730m high). The clouds were pretty thick and so while we were there no gliders “jumped”. But the views from the cable car were breathtaking.
We stopped for lunch at Shongau (where we had stopped on Thursday) and this time our timing was perfect. The stalls we saw being set up on Thursday were open and there were lots of choices of typical foods, wines and beers. This was the closest thing we had seen to a Bavarian Beer Festival.
The last part of our travels today took us through some new countryside until we decided we had had enough travelling. Thank goodness for the iPad and “bookings.com”!
The weather was sunny again today. We have not had a day’s travel interrupted by bad weather.
Unfortunately, I fear all our wonderful eating and drinking is finally catching up on our waistlines. All the walking we are doing is obviously not enough to burn all the calories we are consuming. We must do something about this.
