Koblenz – the start of the Mosel River Tour

What a blast today was. Starting with a 100 km drive down the autobahn from Dinkelsbühl to Würzburg where we had to return the hire car. We had heard that cars travel very fast along this type of road but it was still a shock. A few times I was driving at 150km/hr and I was overtaken by cars going much faster.

The train trip from Würzburg to Koblenz took three hours. I was glad Michael insisted on paying the extra €8 each to reserve our seats as the train was very busy. I would not have enjoyed standing for this time. It was fun to see some of the places we had visited and stayed at last month when we travelled / walked along the Rhine.

After checking into our Koblenz hotel, we walked along the promenade that follows the Rhine and then the Mosel rivers. This area is known as the Deutshes Eck (German Corner, so named in 1216). We had lunch at a restaurant along the Rhine bank. (see separate post).

There are some very interesting sights in this city. A few of the places shown in our photos include the Electoral Palace (Kurfürstliches Schloss), the former Prussian Government Building and a statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I on horseback (originally erected in 1897 and destroyed in 1945 shortly before the end of the war. This is a replica which was placed on the plinth in 1993).

Michael also posed for a picture for his brother Bernie. Can you guess which one?
