Guided beer tasting tour in Brussels

We paid to go on this! €40 each for three hours which included a visit to a 130 year old brewery and two bars/pubs.

We ended up with a very different concept of what constitutes Belgium beer. For instance, even though Belgium makes beautiful pilsners, it is the Trappist ale that it is famous for. We learnt about the difference between top fermenting and bottom fermenting beers, enjoyed several Trappist beers from between 6% and 10% alcohol, and forced ourselves to drink some of the famous Lambic beer straight from the barrel before secondary fermentation. It was very sour, flat and unlike any beer we have ever tasted. We also tasted a number of unpasteurised beers on tap at a bar that does not label any of its 46 beers on tap rather you buy it by the taste you are after, the alcohol content and colour.
