The bastide of Castillonnes – another French Bastide

Today we drove back to the Lot-et-Garonne department to visit the bastide of Castillonnes. We had thought we might have a picnic in this little village but it was so disappointing. Almost every shop or building was for sale, and I am sure the price would have been negotiable.

One thing we did learn about this village was that is was the home of the gentleman who started the Tour de France. He was a barber / hairdresser in this village years ago and rode his bicycle in 1895 around the route that is now famous.

There were some nice buildings, but we decided after a quick walk around we would head back to Villeréal.

We had been to Villeréal on Saturday when it was very busy with the markets. Today was Monday and it was so much quieter. We went to the Tourist Information Office as we wanted to find out if there was anywhere you could have a picnic. We were told that there was a park near the school. If only she had said near the Boules Park, we would have found it in a minute.

Michael explored a few areas of the bastide he could not get to on Saturday.

These were the steps that led to a first storey that was originally used as a court house. It now houses a local FM radio station.

We did end up finding the school and the school principal on her lunch break and we did enjoy our picnic.

It is very cold today and just as we got home to see the dogs, the rain started!

    • Today has been very cold and damp. We are amazed that the sun seems to come out around 5pm and that the next few hours after that are the warmest of the day. Wine does help to keep us warm!
