Walking Tour of Gdansk

The Monument to Neptune is the symbol of Gdansk – created in 1615.

This street was part of the Royal Route and is filled with more restaurants than I’ve ever seen in one place. This area has been totally renovated or rebuilt since the war.

Two of my favourite buildings in the street.

Executioner’s House and Prison Tower plus an Amber Museum

We walked down a small street that is famous in this city for its small shops. There were dozens of them all selling the same things- jewellery made from Amber. Unsure how they make any money from it.

Monument to the Post Office Defenders

On 1/9/1939 the workers at the PO fought off the Nazis for 14 hours. They eventually were defeated and later executed on this adjoining wall.

The Great Armoury
This was constructed between 1602-1605 and has distinct Dutch influence. Too beautiful a place to have been used to store arms.

Reminders of war and its effects are everywhere here. Michael commented today that this is the city where we have seen the most tour groups, and we are so surprised that they are predominantly German tourist groups.

Two things not in the tourist guides.
1. An excavation site in action

2. Street Art
