Eating Out in Little India

We decided to take a walk around 6pm to see if we could find a place to have a drink and enjoy dinner. The first bar we called into told me that a small bottle (185ml) of Jacobs Creek wine would cost $20 (~$17AUD), so we decided to keep looking. At our next stop, we were “rushed” by a woman who could tell we were obviously in the wrong place. Well at least I was. I think Michael would have been welcome to join the few other men there being entertained by a bevy of beauties, all dressed in the same red dress.

The roads were still busy and the sky looked pretty ominous, but it did not end up raining.

Feeling a little less optimistic about finding a suitable bar, we resorted to our usual practice of finding a supermarket. We were very surprised to see a bottle of “Gossips” Merlot priced at $26.50. We know this sells for about $4 at Dan Murphy’s back home, and that is pretty much what it is worth. But, we did find a 2010 Bordeaux for $19. It did not make sense to us. But we did enjoy it.

On our walk back to our hotel, we found an outside restaurant/ bar where there were lots of locals. So we stopped and bought a couple of cold beers and cold beer glasses and enjoyed an hour watching the traffic.

As there were lots of food outlets there I went and bought us some nibblies for $2. We think the small pieces of food were fried garlic. The other fried pieces were cauliflower and the ring thing was like a dough spring onion pattie. Quite nice.

We’ve seen lots of these trucks here. They are licensed to carry 10 people in the back. This one must have been finishing for the day.

We had spotted this restaurant at the start of our walk and joked about it, as this chef is the King of Pig Organ Soup. But, we did end up here for dinner.

This photo shows how the soup is cooked for everyone to see.

But, we chose something a little milder and it only cost us $4.50. A bowl of spiced pork and rice and some meatballs, that did not really look like balls at all.

A few steps further towards home we saw another local food outlet that looked very popular with the locals, so we stopped and tried some baos. I thought they were dumplings, but not so. They were delicious. Again, these two cost us $4.50.

BREAKFAST
This is included in our room rate. When we arrived and seated (thankfully at one of the tables inside as it was already over 30C outside). We were told it was a western breakfast today – no choice unless your are vegetarian I noticed. The meal consisted of scrambled eggs, a small sausage, bacon-like meat, a hashbrown and coleslaw. The last addition may have only been a garnish, and I certainly did not eat it for brekky. If you were a vegetarian, you got the coleslaw and THREE hashbrowns.

Just as we were about to leave we were offered the second course – chocolate ice cream and sprinkles. And guess what? Some people were eating it.
