Relocating a campervan – WOULD WE DO IT AGAIN?

NO.

While we are very happy we did this trip because we got to see some of Australia we’ve never before seen, albeit from our seats in the Fiat, it was not relaxing.

The timeframe given for a relocation means you spend the bulk of each day driving with little time to sightsee or chat with fellow travellers. The large number of kangaroos also meant we were restricted with travelling times.

The van we had was very powerful but was noisy, bumpy and uncomfortable to drive.

Because this was a relocation, we were “dumped” with extra cargo to bring – 6 metal tables which took up extra space and clanged the whole way. We stored them in the bed above the driver so we had no access to a second bed.

SO WHAT DID IT COST?
$35 for the 7 day camper van hire
$18 for the gas bottle refill
TOTAL $53.

FUEL
We spent $732.29 on fuel and were given a $100 cash back on that.

For the 3072 kilometres we used 443.96L – with the average usage being 14.45L/100Km (in the brochure they estimated 13L/100Km).

The dearest fuel we bought was $1.999/L and the cheapest $1.569

Average price paid was $1.694/L.

CAMPING CHARGES
These charges ranged between $25-$35/ day.
TOTAL CAMPING FEES $180.10.

The best caravan park was in Toowoomba and the worst in Tennant Creek.

EXTRA CHARGES
Insurance – to reduce excess to $250 which we chose to pay @ $20/ day ($140)
Window chip damage – $80

What made the trip more expensive for us was the trip on the Ghan and three nights accommodation not in the van, plus lots of dinners out and loads of wine and beer.

Getting to spend quality time each day with Mick, planning our next adventure.

But, house sitting is definitely a better, and our preferred, option.

Will keep you posted when we are about to take off again.
