Breakfast at the hotel was amazing. I don’t know where to begin to describe the variety. I tried local-type fare and found it very tasty. Unfortunately we have paid for three breakfasts but will need to miss Friday’s because of the train we must catch. I am trying not to eat three meals in two sittings.
We chose to visit the Yu Gardens this morning. Only about a ten minute walk through the old part of Shanghai. Fantastic old shops and street food stalls and smaller parks. We came across a group of people dancing in one of the parks.
The Yu Gardens span a two acre block right in the middle of this huge city and were constructed almost 150 years ago. Lots of bonsai trees and because Spring has started, many of them were blossoming.
The Bund, the famous waterfront area in Shanghai was where we spent the afternoon. The skyscape is very impressive. The day was not as clear as yesterday.
We ate a Japanese meal for lunch, yes Japanese, before we cruised the Huangpo River.
One thing we’ve noticed in our short time here is that Shanghai is full of motor bikes – most of them are very old and almost all are electric. They are so quiet and seem not to have to follow the traffic lights. When we cross the road here on foot, we’ve learnt to look both ways for bikes. These are loaded up and most drivers have clever gloves attached to the handles to keep the hands warm in the freezing weather.
Selfie Sticks are all the rage. We have been approached by dozens of people wanting to sell us one. They are extremely popular and people seem to be spending a lot of time taking photos of themselves in different settings. Here is a photo of one lady who we saw take about 6 shots in this one spot!
The weather started to become very cold by late afternoon and our feet were ready for a break, so we headed home for a light dinner. So full after lunch.
