Who’s eaten one (or more) of these?

  
  
We first tasted some last year in France and then I found out my sister Megan was growing them in her garden on the Sunshine Coast. We bought these ones in a supermarket a few kilometres from our housesit and enjoyed them for lunch today. As we were eating them I noticed on the packaging that they were grown in Columbia. How many food- miles is that? 

We just love European grocery stores and are happy to spend time wandering the aisles looking at all the products on offer. Mick is going through meat withdrawal at the moment as this is the most expensive food group here compared to prices at home. The other trap for new players is that the prices are advertised per 100g and not per kilogram. He got a bit excited when he saw some fillet steak advertised as 9.90CHF, and it wasn’t until it clicked that this was per 100g that he did the maths…$140/kg!! Ridiculous. Pork is not so expensive and the sausages are fantastic, so you’ll be pleased to read we will not starve. He bought three fresh fish for 9.50CHF/ KILO which we will eat for dinner. They looked like bream and when we got home I checked that these Dorade Royale were in fact also known as gilt-edged bream. I’ll let you know how they compare in taste to the ones we catch and eat out the back of our home in Queensland.

Part of our luncheon platter from today which included an artisan breadstick and a slice of terrine. No wine though as we are trying to be good until we get to Spain.

  
By the way, the fruit is called physalis or Cape Gooseberry.
