Day 4 Lisbon – Bus Tour Old City

Did you guess that those men were running a laminating business? And yes, there were more than one of these businesses operating in the area. Although, we never saw any customers.

We were woken this morning by the sounds of building construction in neighbouring apartments. This area comprises 18th Century buildings and some of them look as though they have not been touched since they were built. Our apartment has been done up thank goodness. This truck was delivering a load of sand down this pedestrian street we live on!

It was another beautiful morning in Lisbon and we headed off for the second bus tour that would take us through some of the older parts of the city.

Michael loves the graffiti in this city. This particular piece appears to have been made by chipping gyprock off the wall leaving some sections still there.

Yesterday we drove past this old jail, but today we observed some inmates, working under guard, doing some much needed restoration to the jail wall.

These guards were based outside the Belém Palace. Previously this palace had been used by the monarchy but now it is used to house the President of Portugal.

We shared the bus with some fellow Aussies who chose to get off at Jeronimos Monastery (FYI Edward, this was named after Saint Jerome)! It was built in thanksgiving of Vasco da Gama’s discovery of India. It is now state property and it houses tombs of past Portuguese royalty.

We could pick the Aussies because they were sporting some well-loved Australian cricket t-shirts.

I hadn’t really thought about it before, but today we were told that Lisbon is the most westerly European capital. This monument is a celebration of the famous Portuguese discoverers, who risked their lives to discover new lands for Portugal.

We found a funicular (Elvadore de Glória) that took us high over the city to enjoy a different view of Lisbon. The park at the top of this ride had artists and musicians tempting travellers to part with their money.
