Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet is a 16Km drive from here. Now that doesn’t sound too bad, but with the car making terrible noises and with the steep climb down from where we are living to the main road, it is quite challenging. This is a section of the road – I took this photo during our afternoon excursion. Can you see the black car on the right?
The markets were nothing spectacular but Mick was very taken with this old car.

After buying some supplies at the market and the local Carrefour, we took a different road back to Caudiés through the smaller village of Prugnanes. The road was very narrow but I stopped and took a photo of Caudiés and the Notre Dame chapel from this different angle.
After lunch we headed into Fenouillet to walk to one of the two nearby Cathar castle ruins.

These are some photos of the Chateâux Saint-Pierre and of the views from up there.

Mick is pointing in the direction of the house where we are staying. You can see the other castle ruins in this shot – we will visit it another day.
Fenouillet is a very neat and tidy village. We explored some of its narrow streets and significant places.

The cemetery was well kept and was mostly made up of family plots. There were memorials to young men who had died in WW1 and other local war heroes.
When we got back home there were two men walking through our gate. Panic – what to say in French? “I’d like a glass of wine” was not going to cut it. I started to say we we’re Australian but thankfully one of the men started to speak English. It was the local firefighters collecting donations and dropping off their calendar. It was intersting to note that each day on the calendar was marked by a saint’s feastday. Very handy.
