Tautavel Day Trip #1

Why #1?

Because we have to go back.

Only one of the museums was open during the time we had allowed ourselves today.

Our first stop this morning though was our local boulangerie. It was a beautiful day.

After being disappointed yesterday with our bad luck at not finding a cafe, and me not wanting Mick to complain about it again, we started here – to buy a baguette and a coffee and some of their famous biscuits. We weren’t disappointed but note the take away coffee cups.

Tautavel is a very pretty village. Yes, I’ve said that before. But this was very well presented.

But, we had been misled by the website for the museum we had come to see, as it wasn’t opened when we got there. Instead of 10-12.30, it was 11-12. So, we found a bar and had another coffee. Mick was fascinated by the open canal running through the main street.

The tickets we purchased at €8 each allowed entry to a second museum which wasn’t opened until 2pm. 😩 But as we had to get back to our animals, we enjoyed our visit through the modern displays about human prehistory, trying very hard to read the information, all written in French of course. These museums are here because this is the location of the discovery of Tautavel Man, dated at 450,000 years old.

There were other things on display here as well, and Mick was being badly behaved.

On our drive to and from Tautavel we had noticed the hunters out in force (after all, it is Wednesday). You have to look hard at my photo which shows two of the 6-8 we saw along this stretch of road. Each in his high viz shirt, each facing the same direction, gun at the ready. It reminded me of fishing!

We made it home for lunch where we had an encounter with a local council man who could speak no English. We got the message through, he wanted me to move our black and white car so a little tractor could come up our road to repair a break in the electricity line.

The girls helped me do some gardening while Betty was keen for some attention too.

I am wearing my warm oversized top I bought at the Céret markets for €3. It serves to keep me warm and to protect me from loads of white cat hair.  Mick was planning on lighting a bonfire this afternoon to burn off all the clippings he has done but he thought better of it with the council workers only a few hundred metres away.
