Semi-zombied-half-day walking tour of München Altstadt (old town)

We started out feeling fine on only 3-4 hours sleep.

At 6am everything was super quiet, which made it the perfect time to explore Munich. The weather was very overcast and we did have to dodge several showers.

Five hours later we were finding it hard to stand up. The lack of sleep had caught up on us.

Before we flagged, we took in a very up-close and un-crowded tour of the area around the central train station (Hauptbahnhof) , sharing it only with a few street cleaners and some people who were sleeping rough – it was still too early even for them.

We found our hotel around 7.30am and were advised we could leave our luggage but check-in was 2pm. Yikes.

So we headed off towards the old town (Altstadt). It was super quiet. This photo is of Karlsplatz.

We then walked through and around Marienplatz and took in the familiar architectural style of buildings we had noticed on our previous trip to Bavaria.

This next photo shows part of Karl’s Gate.

The New Town Hall, which looked older to me, includes the very famous Glockenspiel which holds daily display of life-sized metal figures that act out traditional German fables at 11am. Perhaps we’ll get to watch it on Monday when we’re more awake.

Saint Michael’s Church (below) minus the not-so-saint-like Mick who had found something else that had caught his attention.

This bronze pig had taken his fancy.

Fischbrunnen (or Fish’s Fountain), has a history that dates back to the Middle Ages, provided a good spot for me to take a little rest.

We eventually found the Vicktualienmarkt where there was much to keep Mick interested and his mind off how tired he was.

Raw meat …… loads of it.

Cooked meat…..

Wine.…

And hops ……. Beautifully displayed.

I bought the most expensive peanuts ever. Most stalls did not display prices but I thought I’d be safe with salted peanuts. I asked for Zweihundert Gramm (200g) and was shocked when they cost me €5 (€25/Kg or $37AUD).

We gave up about 11am and headed back to our hotel where I used my newly-learnt German to explain we had to wait there until our room was ready because we were exhausted. And by good luck our room was ready.

We have purchased a two-day hop on hop off bus ticket which we’ll use for Sunday and Monday.

The rest of the day was spent pretty restfully. 😴
