Bavaria – a Catholic Stronghold

About 60% of Germans are Christian, with approximately half of these being Catholic. However, where we are staying in Bavaria, the Christians are predominantly Catholic.

This small rest area, is one of a few in the village we are living in. I have mentioned there are only 19 homes in the village, but acknowledging their religion is important.

The first weekend we arrived, there was a working bee at the local church. People mowing the lawns and tidying up.

When we were in Bavaria five years ago, I wrote a post about Oberneufnach. That was when we first learnt about the tax for Catholics.

Our hostess here mentioned she was a Catholic but her husband wasn’t, however they both had to pay (Catholic) tax.

Another symbol of Catholicism along the path we walk the dog each day – just 100m from the last photo.

This is another example closer to home.

There are lots more in every village we visit.

Interestingly, our hostess mentioned she was thinking about leaving the Church. I asked her what that would entail and she said she’d have to go to a government agency and inform them. This would need to be done so the tax she paid could be stopped.

Very different.
