Schwend Kirchweih

Well now we have been to two of these festivals, we can safely say that this one was a dud.

It was set up across the road from the beautiful church along with a huge blue and white striped marquee / tent.

Inside the marquee was about 30 young people drinking beer and helping themselves to a suckling pig. It looked pretty promising.

Mick got excited.

But when I asked could we have something to eat, I was told “no”, but also told there was a cafe down the road.

We wandered the streets of Schwend for about five minutes before we found this cafe.

I’d read about it on TripAdvisor. It is inside an old garage and all the furnishings are from the 1950s and 60s.

It was so beautifully decorated with furniture that looked brand new – but wasn’t. They served only coffee and cakes and alcohol of course.

While we were enjoying our morning tea,

… homemade cakes made by an 83 year old ( I think, but don’t quote me on that – or from an 83 year old recipe??), in came a group of girls from the blue and white striped marquee.

They obviously needed something to wash all the pork down with, so they ordered a schnapps each, and then this happened.

Don’t ask me what that was about.

Even better than that, this cafe / garage houses an amazing collection of more than 20 vintage cars and bikes. Apparently all owned by one man, with the cars we saw making up only 30% of his collection.

Mick was impressed.

All the cars were registered and in immaculate condition.

We have seen some amazing cars in Bavaria – the Germans love cars. Yesterday we ventured into one of Neumarkt’s top tourist attractions, the Historical Maybach Museum.

Sadly for us, we could not work out how to get in, and with the exception of this one car, all we saw was this poster.

I’m sure it would have been brilliant.
