Mick’s Berlin Beer Post

Across the road from where Jane booked our accommodation, a Brewdog craft beer pub!

Couldn’t have asked for better.

Friday evening – very very busy. No seats except those outside, and it was raining.

German beer can be described as the 5% sweet lager or pilsner, which is made according to German law, or the Hefeweizen beer – cloudy wheat beer, which has a nice home brew taste. Both of these would have an IBU (International Bitterness Unit) of 12 or less.

Check the alcohol content of these babies.

The IBU of the IPAs (India Pale Ales) I tasted ranged from about 60 to 115.

The menu described one page of Brewdog beers and one page of guest beers.

It was hard work.

You could order a tasting plate – the glasses were beautiful but €6 each – for the exact price you’d pay for a litre divided by 5, for 200 mL. No point in buying more or less – it cost exactly the same.

The Double IPA at 8.5% was extremely bitter, and had very high IBU.

The Elvis Juice IPA had a strange sweetness despite its bitter aftertaste- not my favourite.

Black Rye IPA – 6.5% – was excellent.

Sonrisa- 4.7% – a breakfast IPA? This had a nice bitterness with a light lemon flavour. Easy drinking despite the low alcohol content. No wonder it’s breakfast beer.

The Great Divide Colette – 7.3% – was sweet, tasteless which was surprising for a high alcohol beer. It had a lemon peel after taste.

Jack Hammer – 7.2%, over 100 IBU, made your toes curl, even burps tasted good. The best. My favourite.

Brew Dog Punk IPA was surprisingly rich/ bitter for a 5.4%. It was the cheapest available and the second nicest.

Victory V12 -12% / sweet and malty. Not even a bitter after taste. Disappointing.

This is a hefeweizen- below.

Janie helping me out – NOT!

I noticed a bit too late that if you bought your own 1L container in you could get it filled with whatever beer you liked for a 33% discount.

What a surprise – we’re off to Tallinn next. It isn’t as close as this one, but at 1.2 Km away we’ll get some exercise in as well.

Mick at his wurst.
