Estonia has about the same population as Adelaide – 1.3 Million, and is about 2/3rd the size of Tasmania.
We’ve just spent three nights in Tallinn, its capital city with 445,000 people – about the same as Newcastle, NSW.
Today we travelled by bus ……

……to Tartu – a university city – and Estonia’s second largest city with just under 100,000 people. We are about 50 Km from the Russian / Estonian border – as the crow flies.
This is a Lux bus, but not the one we caught.
Ours was very fancy indeed.
Why did we come here?
When I checked about catching the bus to Riga, it went through Tartu so I thought we should stop and take a look. It is a UNESCO City of Literary.
When we arrived, it was drizzling but we did not have far to drag our bags to the one bedroom apartment I’d booked …
…on the THIRD floor. 😞

I was very worried when I realised this Soviet relic was where we were to spend two nights. Mick thinks it must have been a Soviet workers’ apartment block.
It is being renovated. Check out the insulation work around this door frame.

Not our door thankfully. Ours is made of 1/4″ steel.
One of the main reasons I wanted to stay here was because it had a washing machine.

I’ve never seen anything like it before. You really have to be careful with your fingers. Watch the 3 second video where Mick demonstrates what I mean.
Once the washing was on, we headed off to the Tourist Information Centre and were pleasantly surprised by what we saw in the old town.

It started to rain quite heavily so we didn’t hang around for too long.

But we have all day tomorrow and this evening to explore.
