A Night Out in Riga

Where we are staying is right over the top of one of Riga’s top recommended restaurants – called the Folkklubs Ala.

It doesn’t look very much from the outside, but we got a surprise when we ventured there last night. We walked down some very steep steps into what used to be a former wine cellar. They had 27 Latvian ales on tap and Mick was happy with the one he’d been recommended. We stayed for drinks only and booked ourselves in for dinner on Tuesday evening when they will have music and dancing.

But, we had actually started the evening here.…

……directly across the road from the Folkklubs Ala.

This restaurant had jazz and a brilliant menu. So we decided to splurge.

Just because we could, we also went to a bar right next door to the Folkklubs, (the yellow building in the first photo) even though we had been told by the Folkklubs bar tender it was for young people.

Funnily, when Mick and I walked in to the empty bar the young man there asked if we were looking for the Folkklubs.

We obviously were not his usual clientele.

Dinner was amazing.

To start, Mick chose tartare ostrich and quail eggs. A first for him.

While I chose beetroot croquettes.

Mick had pork belly for his main course. Possibly not as good as he could make at home, but there wasn’t much left.

We enjoyed a Bordeaux and the live jazz before walking across the road and up our steps to our apartment.
