Exploring Vienna on Foot – Day 1

We had a luxurious night’s sleep in our apartment; definitely the best accommodation so far.

Mick cooked dinner last night which was so nice, we’ve decided there will be no restaurants here for us.

You definitely get sick of eating out on a long holiday – or at least we do.

Because it was Saturday, we decided we had to go to the Nachtsmarkt (Vienna’s open air market) and the Flohmarkt (Flea Market only held on Saturdays).

It was very interesting but we were only there to browse.

The market was very close to where we are staying so we headed home for lunch. We then headed out again for a stroll through the main shopping street in the centre of Vienna where we later joined a free walking tour in Albertina Square.

We knew we had to look out for the bright green umbrella and were lucky to get a spot because you can prebook the tour in Vienna.

The building in the back is the Opera House which looks a lot older than it is (~150 years old).

Another thing you miss on a long holiday, besides home cooked meals, is a haircut. Mick actually bought a set of clippers during our house sitting time – so he looks as handsome as ever. But I’m in desperate need of one as is evidenced by this photo of me at a fountain in Albertina.

We visited many key sites on our 3 hour walk, including the Imperial Palace.

I thought many of the sculptures looked like those we’d seen in Italy.

Loads of churches and plazas and beautiful buildings.

We also saw the building where Mozart died, but I resisted taking a photo.

One surprise for us though was seeing these guns for sale on our walk to the markets this morning.

Seems incongruous when there are miles less people murdered here than in Australia.

What do they need these for?????????
