Wine Tasting

Firstly a correction on yesterday’s post.

Seillans is a three flower village. The information I got from the internet yesterday was obviously out of date. We drove through Seillans today on our way to taste some local wines and this time I noticed the sign. The more I drive each day, the more I am confident to look at things other than the road and incoming cars.

We did sample this wine last evening as we sat under the tree in the garden watching gliders float through the air.

Apparently there are brilliant thermals in this area and lots of gliding takes place. Sadly my photo doesn’t show them too clearly. There are actually two in this photo. You will really need to look closely, or just trust me.

We also tried a local rosé, a variety of wine I don’t drink very often, but it’s very popular here in Provence.

Our first stop today was the vineyard of Val d’Iris.

It is a very small operation with only 9 hectares of land cultivated with vines. We only wanted to try the reds, which meant trying two more than the one we sampled last night. A young man had to come up from a work shed and open up the reception area to allow us to sample the wines. Both the new reds we tasted were very good, so we bought one bottle of each which cost €24 – one bottle was €10 and their best wine was €14.

I then drove us literally across the road to a much bigger operation called Chateau des Selves.

This vineyard has a restaurant and a shop with all sorts of goodies like olive oil, glassware, hand crafted soaps along with many other gift items.

You could enjoy a great view of the vines while eating your lunch. But, not today. I think the restaurant is only open on weekends.

The shop was very busy with groups of people buying massive magnums of rosé at €20 each and lots of gift items.

Once they had left with their goodies, we did end up tasting three reds here too and we bought two of the stronger wines – Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

The prices for the wines here were the same as at Val d’Iris. Not really too expensive at all.

On a very different note…….

I’m a huge peanut butter fan. Just peanuts and a little salt. Definitely no sugar. So far, that has proved difficult to find and I recall having this issue before when we’re in France.

Solution ……

I bought some roasted peanuts and made my own peanut butter thanks to our host’s great food processor.

Life is good!!
