This morning I found a beautiful, secluded beach on my walk in Bridport. I followed a few signs indicating a walking trail, and soon gave up on it as there were trees blocking my way, but it did lead me to this.

School holidays start in a few days here in Tasmania, so we are pretty lucky to be only sharing this beachside town with a few other travellers. But it is clear, the town is ready for a huge influx of families. And we can understand why.
Last night, Mick and I were discussing our wine tasting and cellar door experiences here in Tasmania, and Mick commented that he thought the very best wine had been at our first stop, which we visited as part of an organised wine tour from Launceston. He lamented that it is often the way that you visit the best winery first on those tours, but you restrain yourself into only buying one or two bottles because of course, you convince yourself that this couldn’t be the best!!
The first winery we visited was very well known not only in Tasmanian, but also in the Mainland. It was Josef Chromy.
So I suggested to Mick that it would be fitting to end our stay in Tasmania by visiting Josef Chromy again.
We were hoping we could do a wine tasting again at Josef Chromy now that our palates have come to understand Tasmanian wines a little better. When we visited just over 2 weeks ago, our taste buds were tuned into Western Australian and South Australian wines – because that had been what we had been sipping at home.
But, you had to have a booking here to taste wines.
Luckily, there is a small cafe attached to the Josef Chromy cellar door that sells wine by the glass, as well as platters.

I chose a Josef Chromy 2021 Chardonnay and Mick selected a Josef Chromy Pinot Noir. I’m being specific about the full name, as there are other ‘levels’ of these wine varieties sold by the glass as well. When we visited here the first time, we left with a bottle of the JC Pinot Noir and a bottle of Riesling. Both were excellent.
However, today we left with a chilled bottle of the JC 2021 Chardonnay I had with lunch, to share this evening, and to toast our final day here.
We return our hire car in the morning at Launceston Airport, and I have to say that we have both loved having a hybrid car to ‘test drive’. We’ve travelled almost 1700km in 16 days, and averaged 5.5km/100L. Not to be sneezed at with the price of fuel at the moment.
We have really enjoyed Tasmania – and we know there is so much we did not see – so perhaps we might return one day. However, I know of at least one other wine region in Australia that is calling us. More on that once we have decided the details. But it will definitely be after winter.
Thanks for joining us on our wine tasting adventure around Tasmania.
