Well, that is definitely true for early morning walks at least. Later I reflected on why I like it so much and I think it is because the buildings are old, but beautifully maintained and freshly painted. Plus, the buildings are not distracted with trimmings.

The city lights were still on as I walked down the main CBD area this morning. I had woken early (still getting used to the time difference) and enjoyed my time in the almost-empty streets.

We had not seen this side of the Fremantle Markets during our last visit. I love the stonework in these buildings.
Our bed and breakfast was located very close to the Fremantle Prison. The prison was constructed by convicts between 1851 and 1859, and used as the state’s main place for incarceration until it was closed in 1991. It is now used as a Youth Hostel.

The history of this area is beautifully documented and displayed for both locals and visitors. And as the sign says, it is now listed as a World Heritage Site.

This sculpture reflects the hard labour that would have been supplied by the 100s of convicts who were here in the late 19th Century.
I am pretty sure I included a photo of this pub in a post from last year. This also made me think about the buildings I like to photograph.

The local council has been active in preserving the history of the city. All buildings, and even facades are restored and displayed, almost like pieces of artwork.

Walking down this street took me to the marina and local beach.

Yet another pub – proving I like these old buildings. But, it was the portrait that attracted me rather than the architecture.

You need to look closely, but these are very pretty loos beside the beach. The white fabricated construction was actually signposted as Luxury Loos. But, I never checked them any closer.

Just before I headed back to our accommodation for breakfast, I climbed to the top of the hill behind us, to the War Memorial and took a photo of the port. If you look closely you can see the Queen Elizabeth, moored ready to depart later today, heading to Sydney. Hopefully the passengers remain COVID-free.
We’re heading to Busselton in a few hours – and I will write a separate post for that!!
