Sapporo Day 2

OK, I got it a little confused.

But that isn’t too hard considering I’m almost 7,000km away from these Japanese travellers.

Today was the day ALL four of them took part in the activity that Mick and Bernie had been looking forward to the most. And, from the photos and their comments, this is one reason I am glad I am not over there. This activity was definitely not for me.

But, they all loved it.

It started with a bus ride in freezing weather.

While there was not a lot of snow or ice as they left – things were about to get serious.

This activity actually needed special gear – which was provided for them – for a fee of course.

The snow became thicker the closer they got to their destination.

It took them 40 minutes to get there.

And when they did, Mick made a spectacular entrance!!

According to Tom, Mick was showing off here – deliberately using the snowy stairs as a slippery dip.

Anyway, now kitted out in their fully supplied gear – they headed off for the ‘task’.

Have you guessed yet?

Perhaps this will help.

Now for the last hint.

Apparently the smallest fishing rod ever – more like a kid’s fishing rod back home in Australia. But after seeing the size of the fish that they caught – it was appropriately sized.

Mick caught the first fish, Tom caught the most, and Bernie caught the biggest.

I would be so disappointed if I got there and caught only that!! I hope they knew the fish would be that small.

The travellers were not alone on the ice, although they did have their own ‘tent’. There was a guide who showed them the technique they needed to be successful. The bait used was tiny, live maggots, which they then needed to chop up into even smaller pieces, because of course, the fish they were after were so small.

They certainly look like they were pleased to be there. But what surprised me was that the fish they caught were cooked – tempura style – inside their tent. Delicious!!

After that ‘freezing fishing folly’ – the group climbed (very carefully) back up to the bus and were taken to a nearby restaurant for lunch.

They said that the lunch was a “lovely surprise” as steak (which is Mick’s favourite) was on the menu along with BBQ grilled fettuccine – which I’ve never heard of.

When they returned to their hotel, and after a shower and a little rest, Mick and Bernie headed out to find an ATM – to boost the yen in their wallets. A young Japanese (English-speaking) woman offered to show them where the nearest one was.

But remember, these two boys are not in their prime, and they just had a very big morning fishing.

She certainly helped to get their heart rates up! And I would be pretty sure they will both sleep well tonight.
