Farewell to Poland

We have really enjoyed our time in Poland and would encourage those of you who have not been here to visit.

Today we just wandered around a new area of the town for us and literally stumbled on some important sites. Gdansk is full of them.

The Grand Mill

This building once housed a flour mill, a granary and a bakery. I think it is used as a cafe now, but don’t quote me on that.

Across from this mill we spotted a bridge with hundreds of padlocks attached to it. Known as ‘the love bridge‘ (in English), young couples in loved attach a padlock to the bridge and throw away the key into the canal, indicating their love will be unbroken. Very cute.

Close by, was this statue to Jan Heweliusz, a famous astronomer from Gdansk.

I found a large shopping centre where I purchased some of my favourite snacks that I hope will make it back to Caloundra.

We dined out for lunch, trying carefully to use up all our Polish currency before we head to the airport. We did this easily and commented that we should enjoy our last cheap meal. London is so expensive compared to here. I chose a traditional Polish soup called Żurek which I had seen on quite a few menus. It is a sour rye soup with Polish sausage and egg. It was delicious and cost less than $6AUD.

Michael tried the ‘Polish’ fish and chips and was happy with his choice.

Where we dined was on the fourth floor near where we have been staying and we had a great view of the Motlawa River. We heard a commotion below us and spotted these three dragon boats filled with young people. It is obvious that in Gdansk, they encourage young people to enjoy the water.

We are hoping that the next few hours go to plan. I organised an airport transfer (the first one since we left, we usually go our own way on public transport) from our apartment, and thankfully our host has allowed us a late checkout. We them fly on WIZZ Air (never heard of them before – it is a Hungarian airline) to Luton Airport.

The challenge then starts as we have to catch a bus, a train, two changes on the Tube and then a short walk to the apartment I have booked in Chiswick Lane in Hounslow. We expect to get there about 10pm. Will keep you posted on how it goes.
