Farewell to Old England (possibly) Forever

I know, Never say Never.

There are so many things I can think of that I’ve done when once upon a time in my dreamings, I would never have imagined them. For example, I now live in Queensland, sporting short un-dyed grey hair and wearing full braces.

We have really enjoyed our visits to the UK.

On our first visit in 2007, we walked Hadrian’s Wall on advice from a friend (thanks David McRae), and to this day, it is still our favourite holiday ever. We have returned to housesit twice, once in Tenbury Wells and once (for ten weeks in winter) in Kent. Both fabulous experiences. We enjoyed a week in 2010 on a narrow boat with my sister Suzanne and brother-in-law, Chris – a fabulous experience. And on this year’s trip, I spent a weekend in an English pub with two of my sisters from Australia and their husbands, so we could celebrate Chris’ 70th. I never thought that would happen. It was wonderful although I missed my sister Alison and her husband Greg who were unable to join us.

Finally this trip to London for a few days before we fly home via Singapore, gave us a chance to catch up with Edward.

So, why do I think this may be the last visit to England?

The main reason is it is so expensive. I hate paying some of the prices we have to here for food, drink and internal travel. Groceries may be the only exception, and we do love Waitrose and Sainsburys!

I finally get why so many English people live in the south of France, Spain, Portugal and even next door to us in Pelican Waters.(But, we are very glad about that last fact Helen and Derek).

Another reason why this may be our last visit is because there are so many other places I’d like to see. Many of them much cheaper than England and also closer to home.

Although, Michael has said he’d come back tomorrow for a house sitting gig, especially if it was to look after Robbie and Leo in Kent!

And of course, if Edward moves over here to work after he has completed his PhD.

  1. Tasmania is a good place to visit!! Let’s hope that if there is a next time the dollar is much stronger against the £. It’s nice to pay €3 for a beer here.

  2. We’re glad to live next door to you two as well! Looking forward to seeing you both at the end of the week. Safe travels.

  3. You two in particular will never say never. Indomitable, both of you. Who would have thought your ‘retirement’ years would have held so much fun.
