Espéraza Markets and More

Surprisingly to us, these markets were better than those at Céret; full of hippies, organic food and theatre, plus quite a few English people.

It didn’t take Mick long before he found his favourite shop where he selected a pork knuckle.

It was hard to choose from all on offer – including pigeon, quail and rabbit.

We bought loads of veggies as well as vegan cheese which we have not yet tried 😳.

Mick tasted (and the bought a bottle of) the local sparkling wine from this area, made like a champagne but called Blanquette. He’s posing here for me in front of a load of hippies; all very happy people.

One of our favourite stalls at these markets is the dried fruit stall where we stocked up on more ginger. But just look at this selection for Christmas cakes.

Our bags were so full we had to unload once and continue our shopping before heading to a little commune called Rennes-Le-Chateâux.

The owner of this dog kindly took our photo.

The Church in this commune is famous, having featured in loads of conspiracy theories thanks to a priest from here Bérenger Saunière. If you have time, you could click the link to read more about him and this location. He was accused of “Mass trafficking” as one explanation for his wealth. This chapel…

… featured in the Da Vinci Code movie. The main church was closed today, understandably because it was Sunday, but I loved this sign.

The collection box was missing, presumably stolen.

After a brief visit we headed back towards home for lunch. Tune in next post if interested in food.
