Taormina Day 3

Kath was feeling much better today, although she still has her cough.

So after breakfast we headed out for a good look around Taormina’s streets. And, I have to now admit, that we strolled at the pace of most tourists here, as if we had all the time in the world. Exactly like those I complained about in my last post.

In particular, we enjoyed watching artists and visiting art galleries, but so far have resisted the temptation to buy anything.

At our slow pace, I have to admit that we got to notice so much more.

Such as this detail in a rock wall.

Very clever!!

Mick is going to have a go at making me something like this when he gets home.

But I think they look better when you have a few of them. I’ll see how he goes with his first one before I ask him for half a dozen more.

Kath and I popped into the Duomo – Chiesa S Nicolò di Bari, while Mick waited for us outside.

It has a nickname of the Fortress Cathedral, because it doesn’t look like your typical church.

I’ve been pleased to spot quite a few of these on my walks.

Taormina is way ahead of Palermo in terms of rubbish management.

We did smile at this sign near the main Piazza.

It’s a bit faded, but the top diagram states “Do not go bare chested.”

Those of you who know Mick well would know that is his standard outfit at home. But, he obeyed these rules while we were here.

A highlight of our walk was a brief glimpse of Mount Etna. I’ve crudely highlighted it for you as you need a good imagination. But, it actually was there for a short time.

I have organised a private excursion to Mount Etna for us tomorrow. We are to be taken to a farm to taste Etna honey which is supposedly excellent, and after viewing the volcano, from hopefully a very safe distance, we will visit a winery for lunch. But more on that in my next post.

After a nap to rest our feet, we headed out for a drink, yes we could only afford one, at the Hotel Metropole Lounge Bar. I’d spotted this place on our first walk and was keen to try it. It was to be Mick’s shout!

He was shocked at the prices.

But we did get nibbles.

Sadly, the wine was terrible and for the first time ever we were charged for the wine we returned as well as its replacement. It gets a scathing review from me on Trip Advisor. €48 for drinks for 3 of us is soooo over the top.

But the view was good.

We had dinner at a different restaurant which was much less expensive and much better.

Note to self: fancy restaurants aren’t always better than the local ones.
